17 août 1887 - Marcus Garvey Born

Description:

Corresponded and worked with Washington -both saw the importance of economic development. Accepted the need for economic enterprise. Saw a separate African American community, aware of its African roots and part of a wider pan-African movement. Strong believer in pan-Africanism – unity, solidarity and pride amongst Africans worldwide. He was a separationist, wanting separation from whites. Black nationalism was always separate from the civil rights movement as it was about black independence not rights. Garvey influenced later black nationalists.

Garvey launched the Negro Factories Corporation to promote manufacture and trade among Africans and set up a shipping company called the Black Star Line to trade with Africans worldwide.

Had an agreement with a white supremacist - shared the view that Africans should be sent back to Africa, called the Agreement of Liberia.

Du Bois opposed Garvey despite both accepting the need for economic enterprise and improvement backed by greater education. Du Bois stressed getting equal rights in the US and attempting to integrate African Americans and secure justice and equality for them. This again highlights tension within black opinion which continued throughout the time period.
