The Renaissance is ended by the counter-reformation. The counter-reformation is started in Germany and soon, Protestant churches were being established all over Northern Europe. this made everyone fear that Italy would turn Protestant. this caused the Catholic church in Italy to make whats now called "the Counter-Reformation". one of their most significant laws was that if anyone was to show sympathy to the Protestant church, they were to be arrested. in addition, they also arrested anyone that had different ideas from the church. the Counter-Reformation had a massive impact on artists, scientists, and writers in Italy. they could no longer discuss their ideas and opinions freely. these laws made it so no one wanted to create daring works and present new ideas in fear they might offend the Catholic church. this lead to Italy falling behind the rest of Europe. Italy still produced great artists, but there were far fewer and less creative.
