Millions of voters began queuing before dawn yesterday to cast votes in a historic re-run of a rigged election in Malawi which is being seen as a test case for democracy in Africa.

Last year’s contested national ballot became known as the “Tipp-Ex election” after splodges of correction fluid on tally sheets and other irregularities helped secure a second term for President Mutharika, 79.

The disputed result was struck down in February by Malawi’s constitutional court after months of street protests racked one of the continent’s most peaceful states. The ruling was only the second time in African history that judges have nullified a vote; the first was in Kenya in 2017. (The Times)
