11 déc. 1762 - Rousseau, Social Contract

Description:

The Social Contract is a book published in 1762 in which Jean-Jacques Rousseau discusses how freedom is possible in a civil society. His famous quote from this book was, “Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains”. These chains were not found in a natural state, but in a commercial state. He seeks the basis for a political theory in which people must give up their natural liberty. He comes up with a solution, the “social contract”, in which people make an agreement to band together for mutual preservation. The Social Contract and the philosophy contained within it later became the basis for the underpinnings of democratic government.
