The fundamental main reason was to change the structure of the foreign trade imposed by the Canton System which has been going on since 1760. On the article V treaty ports opened for foreign trade, for example Nipo, Fuzhou, Shanghai, Xiamen which were all allowed to trade with anyone they wished.
