In the spring of 1889, hundreds of thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators occupied Tiananmen Square, Bejing’s central gathering space.
They wanted an end to corruption in the ruling party, a greater say in the government, and better conditions in the universities.
Thousands of students staged a hunger strike and ignored government orders for them to leave.
Finally, Chinese leaders took action. In early June tanks and armed began to move toward Tiananmen Square.
Shot at people they saw on the streets.
Hundreds of protesters were killed and thousands wounded.
The Chinese government’s action stunned the West.
Most Western nations and international aid agencies stopped or cut back on loans to China, and tourists would not visit.
