Alessandro Volta invented and created the first battery alternating disks of zinc and silver separated by clothes or paper with sodium hydroxide or salt water. The disk on the top was made of zinc and it was the positive pole and the disk on the bottom was made of silver (copper) and was the negative pole. So when you had to use electricity you only had to join both cables8positive and negative) to the object you want to use and it worked.
