Leading up to the fall of Rome was the crisis of the Third Century. From 235-284, Rome nearly broke down, as a result of the threats of invasion, civil war, inflation- causing an economic depression, and plague. This crisis was sparked by the assassination of Emperor Severus Alexander, murdered by his own troops in 235, causing a 50 year crisis where Rome almost crumbled.
