POLITICAL FACTORS:
- Saddam placed family and friends into important governmental positions as this gave him more influence over what went on. These people were also much less likely to rebel against him.

MILITARY FACTORS:
-He also placed family and friends into important positions here.
-He extended government control over the army and secret police -> opponents were tortured and executed.
-Increased spending on military to keep army generals loyal to him.

ECONOMIC FACTORS:
-Saddam nationalised the oil industry. The wealth that accumulated from this was used to improve education and health services which many people were happy about. He also extended the regions that access to electricity
-The Iraqis reduced oil production and sales to the west (in retaliation for the west supporting the formation of Israel). This increased oil prices. In 1972 they made $575 million which increased to $265 000 million in 1980.

RELIGIOUS FACTORS:
-Saddam gave jobs to Shia Muslims although he was a Sunni Muslim. This was to show that he was a fair leader and was not going to repress people.
