Description:
The biggest shake-up in adoption law for 30 years took effect, allowing unmarried and same-sex -couples to assume joint responsibility for an adopted child for the first time.
Under the Adoption and Children Act, which was passed but was implemented in stages, adoptions are no longer limited to married couples or single people.
