Description:

Nearing the end of the Civil War, The first of three major amendments to the United States Constitution was implemented. The Amendment stated:

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

This amendment pushed into new territory that welcomed the idea of freedom and attempted to abolish an institution that has zero accountability for its actions.
