The Byzantine Empire was still considered part of the Roman Empire as it adopted Greco-Roman cultures and the poeple still considered themselves Roman. When this city fell, the empire fell and as a result, the Roman Empire had fallen. SInce the Byzanitne EMpire was still considered to be the Eastern Roman Empire, when it fell the Roman Empire no longer existed.
