Description:

The first highway built and federally funded by the U.S government. Its construction began by 1811 and stretched from Pennsylvania to Illinois. It was a major overland shipping route and an important connection between the North and the West. The vision President Thomas Jefferson involved the National Road supporting westward expansion and unify the developing nation. Also known as the National Turnpike, it successfully promoted commerce and stimulated the act of traveling between the Atlantic colonies and the West. The Cumberland Road played an important foundation for the U.S federal highway system evident today.
