Gondul, after awaking in a shivering-cold cell in Oblivion, finds himself being spoken to by a strange apparition — the apparition of Varen Aquilarios. 'The Prophet' as he calls himself helps Gondul escape during a large group of prisoners work together to free themselves from Coldharbour.

Eventually, Varen guides Gondul to meet with Lyris Titanborn, who explains to him they need to work together to free 'the Prophet.'

Gondul, naïve of the true importance of rescuing Varen, agrees to assist them both — and himself. After a tough fight and through careful teamwork, Gondul, Lyris, Varen and a handful of other Soulless ones manage to escape the pits of Coldharbour.

Gondul, mortified by the loss of his childhood friends Norrin and Guilidus, awakes in a strange and spacious room, greeted by the Prophet who aided him in his escape. They spoke, and much was explained to Gondul of who Molag Bal was and his plan to merge Nirn with Coldharbour.

It turns out that Gondul, after escaping Coldharbour, had been adrift in the sea. A crew of sailors reeled him in and brought him to safety in the home of a Nordic woman named Liezl.

After his conversation with the Prophet, Gondul weakly stepped out into the warm and ashy streets of Davon's Watch, Morrowind. Confused by the strange culture of the Dunmer, he scurried away to the nearest inn and bought a cup of mead — or at least the Dunmer version of it.

Gondul realized that his friends would not want for him to abandon the Brotherband so easily, to be defeated so meekly.

They would have wanted him to continue on as the Headmaster of the Ruby Brotherband, and to avenge them. Seek out those who have suffered the same fate as himself, and unite under one banner, thwarting the plans of the Daedric Prince Molag Bal. And so, with that thought in mind, Gondul left the inn and set off to find others who had lost their Souls.
