27 août 410 - Sack of Rome Alaric and the Visigoths 24-27 August 410 CE

Description:

This event is the Sack of Rome by the Visigoths, on 24-27 August 410. Alaric and the Visigoths sieged Rome of millions of pounds of gold, silver, silk, hide, and pepper. Rome was completely besieged, and people were stripped of their riches, and people were starting to feel as if Rome had become “… the grave of the Roman people.” (-St. Jerome, 412). The population of the Roman Empire was around 50 million (±15m), and the entire Empire felt the effects, even reverberating around the Mediterranean. These changes lasted pretty much forever, since the siege hastened the “fall of Rome.” Since power had already been transferred to the Byzantine empire, Western Rome fell with hastened speed. This event was part of the slow interchange between the Classical era and the Middle Ages, as well as the so-called “Fall of Rome”.
