Description:

Franco led the brutal suppression of the uprising in Asturias and riled up the conflict between Left and Right in the country. In 1935 he became Chief of Army Staff. When Sotelo, leader of the opposition, was murdered it triggered the military coup which was plotted since February. At first Franco kept his distance from the plot, but joined in the last minute. The coup failed and had a part in the start of the Spanish Civil War.
