Description:
Johnson told the American public that on August 2 and August 4 of 1964, that North Vietnamese torpedo boats had fired on 2 American destroyers that were patrolling in the Gulf of Tonkin. The Gulf of Tonkin was a free waterway where anybody could drive a boat. Johnson needed permission from congress to bomb Vietnam. On this day, congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which gave Johnson the right to take all measures necessary.
