LBJ announced that he “would not seek nor accept the nomination for president….” Many democrats fought for this election. The democratic nominees were Eugene McCarthy, Robert Kennedy, and Hubert Humphrey. McCarthy was a dove, Kennedy was against poverty and racism, and Hubert Humphrey was big into social rights and social reforms. The final nominee was Humphrey but he lost the Election of 1968 to Richard Nixon.
