After making my commitment to American University, my aunt had approached me and informed me that she was disappointed in the fact that I had not chosen an HBCU such as Howard. The black community has a stigma surrounding the idea of bettering yourself when it requires you to have to lean into predominately white areas. It was a reminder that being educated and black can never co-exist without expectation of black people. Black people who are your kin, can shit on you just as well as they can support you.
