Description:
4:44 is rapper, Jay Z, or Shawn Carter’s thirteenth studio album, containing ten songs on its digital version. An additional three songs are available to an audience willing to purchase the album in a physical copy. The album was released on June 30, 2017. Roc Nation, Jay Z’s very own record label, produced 4:44. Other artists featured on the album include: Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Gloria Carter, Damian Marley, Blue Ivy Carter, and James Blake. From this album, I have been able to derive countless intertextual connections. Because I am limited to three, I chose to explore the roots and reactions to this album as well as it’s implications within the greater field of hip hop. I was able to do this by choosing to connect Beyoncé’s most recently released Album, “Lemonade,” Frank Ocean’s latest and second ever released album, “Blonde,” and Kanye West’s first released, and critically acclaimed album, “The College Dropout.” I chose to begin with 4:44 as my reference text due to it’s high quality, but I am also inspired by Jay Z’s lasting breadth of influence throughout the hip hop industry.
