23 avr. 2016 - Lemonade

Description:

Lemonade exists in multiple mediums as Beyoncé Knowles Carter’s sixth studio album. First, Lemonade was released as a “visual album,” by HBO on April 23, 2016. Shortly afterwards, Lemonade was released for digital download as well as streamed on typical music streaming sites. Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records are responsible for the production of the album. After its drop, Lemonade went on to sell more copies than any other record produced in 2016. Beyoncé’s honest recounts of experiences with infidelity, the struggles of women in general, and specifically black women, are some of the larger themes explored within the album. Beyoncé uses lyrical and literal depictions of black women’s bodies as a subject within the body of this work. Although black women’s bodies have been traditionally exploited within the music industry, Beyoncé uses these images in an empowering way, proving that intentionality is everything. In this album, Beyoncé is accompanied by a number of feature artists, including Frank Ocean, Jack White, The Weeknd, James Blake and Warsan Shire. More than any other referent text I chose to include within this project, the textual components of Lemonade coincide and overlap with 4:44 fundamentally. Beyoncé’s exploration of her husband’s extramarital affair is discussed in depth within the album. A number of songs within 4:44 address this very same affair directly, especially within Jay Z’s track “Family Feud.” Within 4:44, he chooses to include a song dedicated to his mother, including a poem written and read by his mother, Gloria Carter. Similarly, Beyoncé includes sentiments expressed by her husband’s grandmother, in which Mrs. Carter explains the importance of turning lemons into Lemonade.
