8 févr. 2012 - "Gloria Steinem on Rape in War"

Description:

Gloria Steinem is a figurehead of the Second Wave of Feminism, spanning from the 1960s to the late 1970s. Second Wave Feminists commanded many essential rights that we enjoy as women today. These women helped to more strictly criminalize rape, ensured a woman’s right to an abortion, made strides towards the signing of an Equal Rights Amendment, and normalized women entering the workforce while effectively deconstructing the nuclear family model. Because violence against women was a huge issue that feminists hoped to address, it was during this time that Gloria Steinem, along with bell hooks, began to found the first instances of women’s shelters and rape crisis centers in our country. In this article, Steinem recounts her experiences helping battered women, along with her expertise surrounding violence against women, intensified by an atmosphere of toxic masculinity.
