29 déc. 2011 - Teaching My Mother How To Give Birth

Description:

Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth is Kenyan-born Somali Poet, Warsan Shire’s first published book of poetry. The collection of poems which comprises the book were first published in 2011 by Flipped eye Publishing as a poetry pamphlet. In 2016, however, this collection of poems was finally published as a book. Shire’s spoken word poems have been very well received within her field, earning her multiple awards. Now authoring a number of editions of poetry, many of her works have been translated to multiple languages. This is because of the high quality of Shire’s work, but also exemplifies Shire’s goal to speak specifically to immigrants and refugees, as she is an immigrant herself, currently residing in California. Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth is an exploration of female identity, examining the implications of being a mother and daughter, and hosting a female body while experiencing the struggles of immigration and familial and romantic relationships. This text is deeply interconnected to Beyoncé’s “Lemonade,” as multiple poems from this work are recited, verbatim within the duration of Lemonade. I chose to include this connection within my greater intertext concept tree because I genuinely believe that this book of poems served as one of the most prominent inspirations affecting this album; but, I also chose to include this book of poetry because it’s dark, cutting diction is tremendously powerful and deserves attention.
