10 févr. 2004 - The College Dropout

Description:

Released over 10 years ago, in February 2004, Kanye West released his debut album, “The College Dropout.” He is referring to himself, as he dropped out of his freshman year of college to pursue a career in music. The College Dropout was released through the Roc-A-Fella record label, cofounded by Jay Z. This began the dynamic relationship of Kanye West and his mentor, Jay Z. The album contains a new type of rap, that will inspire countless other artists that have gained fame themselves at this point, as Kanye West’s raps were not about crime, guns, or anything else typical in rap. Kanye instead raps about inequalities, his family, his education, and his hometown. The album features other artists including: Syleena, Jay Z, Jamie Foxx, Common, Mos Def, and the Boys Choir of Harlem. I chose this text as a referent text to Jay Z’s 4:44, as Jay Z refers to Kanye a number of times within his album, namely in the first track on the album, “Kill Jay Z.”
