12 avr. 1962 - Who Taught You How to Hate Yourself?
Description:
On May 5, 1962, Malcolm X addressed the attendants of Ronald Stokes’ funeral in Los Angeles, California. Ronald Stokes was a black man and also a victim of police brutality. Like Malcolm X, Stokes was also a member of the Nation of Islam. In the speech, Malcolm X addresses black people, asking, “Who taught you to hate the texture of your hair? Who taught you to hate the color of your skin? Who taught you to hate the shape of your nose and the shape of your lips? Who taught you to hate yourself from the top of your head to the soles of your feet?” Malcolm X goes on to question police brutality, racial profiling, and the place of black women in our society. This speech is sampled in Beyoncé’s visual album, Lemonade.
