13 juill. 1936 - Death of José Calvo Sotelo

Description:

The murder of José Calvo Sotelo, the leader of the extreme right, was the final outrage for the right and the army. This event resulted in a military uprising led by Emilio Mola, Francisco Franco and José Sanjurjo and heralded the start of the Spanish Civil War. Senor Calvo Sotelo , the leader of the small Monarchist party, was founded in the River Manzanares in Madrid. Senor Sotelo was considered by the Right and the Left as the only possible serious future leader of the Fascist party in Spain. He was a member of the Cortes, and Minister of Finance in the Government of Primo de Rivera. It is proven the murder of Sotelo was carried out by members of the police in revenge for the killing of Police Lieutenant de Castillo, a chief of police with anti-Fascist tendencies. The man that murdered Senor Sotelo was a friend of the Lieutenant de Castillo and sworn to avenge him if he were killed.
