With rising anarchists feelings and left wing protests, Casas Viejas, a small village huddled on the furthermost edge of the Serranía de Ronda mountain range, had experienced a rising of their own. Workers in the CNT had begun marching the streets, demanding change and revolution. The state eventually sent guards to the village to stop the protests. However, a man and his two sons-in-law had locked themselves into a hut after shooting and killing a guard. The guards shot at the house and eventually set it on fire. People fleeing the building were shot at and many were killed. This massacre caused outrage across the country and the left began to lose support.
