The Popular Front, a broad left-wing coalition headed by Manuel Azaña, wins the majority of seats in the Spanish Cortes (parliament). During the first four months of Popular Front rule, 113 general and more than 200 partial strikes take place, while 170 churches, 69 clubs, and the offices of 10 newspapers are set afire by arsonists.
