8 nov 1923 - Beer Hall Putsch

Description:

- 2 causes: On the evening of November 8th 1923, Hitler and members of the Nazi Party along with 600 of the party’s supporters formed into a paramilitary group called the SA (also known as Stormtroopers) marched on the Bürgerbräukeller (a larger beer hall in Munich, Germany) where German right-wing politician Gustav Ritter von Kahr was making a speech to 3000 people. Kahr was forced at gunpoint from the auditorium and Hitler gave a short speech resulting with the support of the crowd and forced Kahr and two other members of the Bavaria’s triumvirate; Hans Ritter von Seisser and Otto von Lossow to offer their support to him. Lossow, Seisser and Kahr were then set free, enabling them to warn others of Hitler’s attempted Putsch, and organize and opposition.

- 2 effects: On 9th November, Hitler began a march with 2000 men on th Bavarian Defence Ministry but was stopped by the police. 16 marchers and four police officers were killed, ending the putsch. Hitler was then jailed for five years for treason, yet only served nine months as he was seen as a celebrity in jail.
