Description:
Many non-spaniards, mainly associated with communist and socialist groups, joined the international Brigades. They believed that the Spanish Republic was a front line in the war against facism. Around 40,000 foreigners fought with the brigades, representing 53 nations; most of which were from France, Nazy Germany, Austria, and Italy. Others were from the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Poland, Canada, Yugeslavia, and Hungary.
