16 févr. 1936 - The Popular Front Wins the Majority of Seats in the Spanish Cortes

Description:

The 1936 elections in Spain had 473 seats at stake in the Spanish Cortes. The majority winners of these elections were the popular front, which were an electoral coalition and pact signed in January 1936 by various left-wing political organizations, created by Manuel Azaña for the purpose of contesting this year's election. 4,654,116 people (34.3%) voted for the Popular Front, whereas the National Front obtained 4,503,505 (33.2%) and the center parties got 526,615 (5.4%). This was seen as a big deal because this coalition was just created a month before, and it was already winning elections. The popular front ended up winning 263 out of the 473 seats in the cortes.
