In 1923, during a military dictatorship, Gen. Miguel Primo de Rivera took power. But the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera could not maintain order against a rising tide of war. Spain plunged into a severe economic recession when the Great Depression broke out in 1929 and the ruling class found it could no longer contain the growing anger with brute force.
