17 août 2000 - North Shore Council seeks ways to increase density

Description:

Auckland, Aug 24 - Ways to encourage better high-density housing design are being sought by North Shore City Council.

Criticism of a rash of developments likened to TV's Coronation Street and residents' demands for planning rules that forbid them being built, are fuelling the quest.

Council strategy and finance committee chairwoman Jenny Kirk said the committee knew high-quality design and living environments made for successful intensive housing.

Acting to achieve that goal would include looking at where such developments could be built and encouraging better design.

As well, to support increasing housing densities, council would need to provide a greater range of protected open spaces.

The committee hopes to receive a report in November on how to pay for the improvements, including buying additional reserves and improving those in intensive housing areas. ar.
