10 mai 1740 - Negro Act

Description:

In response to the Stono Rebellion, the authorities in South Carolina moved to reduce possibilities of rebellion. Owners of plantations were penalized for brutal treatment of slaves, and a school was started to give the salves an opportunity to learn Christianity. Regulations on the slaves were also tightened. The new law required a ratio of one white for every ten blacks on every plantation, and the assembly passed the Negro Act to prohibit the enslaved from growing their own food, assembling into groups, earning money – basically restricting their rights.
