Description:

The Washington Naval Treaty, commonly known as the 5-power treaty, was signed during 1922 (In Washington DC ) by the major nations that had won World War 1. Including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Italy, and Japan. The Treaty was made in order to prevent outbreak of wars, by limiting naval construction and size of Military. This was very effective in preventing military from expanding, in fear WWI would happen again. This marked the end of a long period of consistent Naval Construction. It was not until the mid 1930's that navies began to build battleships once again, and power and size of new battleships began to increase once again. The terms of the Washington treaty were modified by the London Naval Treaty of 1930 and the Second London Naval Treaty of 1936. By the mid-1930s, Japan and Italy renounced the treaties, while Germany renounced the Treaty of Versailles which had limited its navy. Naval arms limitation became increasingly difficult for the other signatories. The London Naval Treaty sought to extend the Treaty until 1942, but by this time Japan and Italy were largely involved in the war, and it was practically ineffective.
