1 janv. 1922 - Mussolini becomes Italy's leader

Description:

Benito Mussolini created and led the Fascist Party in Italy in 1919. He criticized the Italian government for their weakness at the Treaty of Versailles and organised a paramilitary unit called the "Black Shirts," who terrorized political opponents and helped increase the influence of fascism. The Italian government became chaotic and Mussolini said that only he could restore the country and was given the title of prime minister in 1922. By 1925 he made himself a dictator and slowly demolished the democratic system.

Causes
1. Benito Mussolini was angry with the Italian government for allowing their country to be cheated unfairly at the Treaty of Versailles. He was frustrated with the weakness of the government and thought that the country needed a new leader.
2. Italy slipped into political chaos because of Mussolini’s paramilitary unit, “The Black Shirts”. They terrorized Mussolini’s political opponents. Mussolini stated that he was the only one that could restore order and people believed him.

Effects
1. Mussolini led a fascist party, so when he came to power, he made fascism more popular. His government controlled everything, and no one could say otherwise.
2. While Mussolini was in charge, he managed to reclaim lost land for Italy. With this new land, he created railroads, schools, bridges and more, which was a solution for unemployment. This made him extremely popular in Italy.
