Mary Etta Fine was born in April 1924 and started playing tennis as a 16-year-old. She took to the sport almost instantly. Fine and her sister Eva were two of the early stalwarts of the American Tennis Association tour, which helped to promote African-American tennis before blacks were accepted at local clubs, and until the United States Lawn Tennis Association (now the USTA) desegregated in the 1950's.
