Following the first Auckland Māori Housing Summit in April 2018, the Independent Māori Statutory Board worked to establish a Māori housing strategy and action plan and to build support for that strategy among the community and government.

Led by discussion at the 2018 Summit, it was decided the name for the project would be the Kāinga Strategic Action Plan.

In July 2018, the Board recognised the direction set at the Summit and committed to the urgent development of the Kāinga Plan.

The Board put in place an expeditious timeline for the Kāinga Plan, providing windows for on-going input and consultation on a final draft document, concluding mid-October, 2018. Documents associated with the development of the Plan and its consultation are available here.

The Kāinga Strategic Action Plan was approved by the Board in December 2018 and circulated to stakeholders including government and Auckland Council.

The Kāinga Strategic Action Plan was formally launched on May 14, 2019 at the Auckland Māori Housing Summit 2019 .
