Description:
- Needed a lot of workers, so they adapted the Inca practices of Mita or draft labor, and forced native villages to send 1/7 of male population to work at mines, particularly in difficult and dangerous chores for little money
- Work was brutal, and death rate was high, so Native men sought to evade mita obligations by fleeing to cities or hiding in distant villages
