- Sponsored by Fernando and Isabel of Spain- tried to find a Western route to go to the East due to wind trajectory
- Instead of the East, he sailed to the Bahamas, Caribbean
- Consequence: Word spread about his voyage, so others soon followed his path, and eventually discovered that the American continent and Caribbean islands had a lot to offer too
