The Japanese military after a three month long siege captured the Chinese capital city of Nanjing which marked the beginning of one of the most atrocious moments of human history during a time of war.
Importance to Japanese expansion: This victory proved another moment of Japanese superiority to the Japanese people and the world. The victory in Nanjing turned into the Rape of Nanjing in the following days after its capture. This was an important event in the path of Japanese expansion, but it also reveals the dark, racist attitude among the Japanese people for the Chinese.
International Response: Although not direct, the United States in December 1937 began, along with the UK and France, began making loans to the Chinese in order to support their war effort. There was not much of an international response to the capture of Nanjing since news of its state weren’t being released to the international community.
