The magnetic field around earth showed polarity switching directions. Molten material hardens quickly after erupting under water. Patterns in the rock supporteed sea-floor spreading, and each time rock emerges from the mid-ocean ridge, it's poles switch and new patterns are formed. This relates to tectonic plates because they formed the uderwater mountain range, or the mid-ocean ridge.-Source 5
