- The Civil Constitution of the Clergy provoked much opposition- Most Clerics disagreed with it's limitation of the Pope's jurisdiction to spiritual affairs
- The Oath declared Clergy's support of the nation's constitution
- Priests either accepted the constiution or lost their Parishes
