Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring is often credited with sparking the environmental movement in the 60s and 70s. "Silent Spring" revealed the harmful effects of DDT, a commonly used agricultural pesticide, on wildlife and the environment. This lead to the eventual ban of DDT and the creation of safer pesticides, and raised fear and concern over the impact of industry on health and the environment. Her book was a bestseller for 31 weeks, and it heightened the general public's awareness and concern of human impact on the natural world.
