What: Compromise over the extension of slavery into new territories intended to balance the number of slave and free states. Maine is admitted as a free state and Missouri is admitted as a slave state. No slave states allowed above the 36°30' (Mason-Dixon) line.

Why: Temporarily fixed the slavery extension question, but didn't solve the problem of growing sectionalism.
