Leading up to it, Swedish Vikings traveled east, raiding parts of the Baltic and Finland. They also traveled down the Volga and Nepa rivers, down to the Caspian and Black seas, and were mostly merchants trading Iron, Slaves, and Furs. The vikings were kicked out of what is now north-west russia, but Prince Rurik was invited back to rule over Novgorod and laid the foundation for the Kievan – Rus. They had a reputation as fearsome warriors and were asked to join Byzantine service in 874, formally asked to join Emperor Basil II’s personal guard in 988, and became known as the Varangian Guard from the 10th century to the 14th century.
