The principle that the speed and capability of computers can be expected to double every two years, as a result of increases in the number of transistors a microchip can contain is Moore's Law. Moore's Law refers to Moore's perception that the number of transistors on a microchip doubles every two years, though the cost of computers is halved. For such portable devices, power dissipation is important because the power provided by the battery is rather limited.
