Herman Hollerith was an American inventor who developed an electromechanical punched card tabulator to assist in summarizing information and, later, accounting. He was born on February 29, 1860 in Buffalo, New York and died on November 17, 1929 in Washington D.C. Herman Hollerith made a major contribution to the invention of the modern digital computer with his punched card tabulating machine, invented in 1890. His Invention became the foundation of a company that evolved into International Business Machines (IBM).
