The abacus, also called a counting frame, is a calculating tool that was in use in the ancient Near East, Europe, China, and Russia. Merchants who traded goods needed a way to keep count (inventory) of the goods they bought and sold. The abacus is one of many counting devices invented to help count large numbers. The abacus was invented in China, around 1300 BC.
