Description:
The placenta is composed of tissues derived from the embryo. The placenta connects to the conceptus from the umbilical cord. This structure takes over the role of feeding the embryo 4-12 weeks into gestation; the decidual cells are no longer needed for feeding. The umbilical cord takes waste and deoxygenated blood through two umbilical arteries. The nutrients and oxygen are carried from mother to fetus through a single umbilical vein.
